STM Open Access Dashboard

Research Consulting was commissioned by STM to support the development of their Open Access (OA) dashboard, which aims to enhance understanding of the shifting OA publishing landscape.

The dashboard, which is currently on its second iteration, draws on data from the Scopus database, the ESAC Transformative Agreement Registry and the Directory of Open Access Books. Across a range of pages, the dashboard provides insights into levels of OA uptake and OA publishing options for articles, reviews and conference papers, with splits by discipline, funder and country. It also includes an overview of trends in the uptake of transformative agreements and open access book publishing.

Our work comprised data collection and analysis, leading to the development of a set of 22 visualisations using Power BI. These were subsequently implemented via the Flourish platform and embedded in the STM OA dashboard website. Research Consulting also supported the writing of the narrative text presented via the dashboard website, focusing on quality assurance and the interpretation of findings. Our project deliverables included the Power BI dashboard, Flourish visualisations, and a detailed analysis methodology.

The dashboard is available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International licence (CC BY-NC), allowing the data, narrative and visualisations to be widely shared and adapted for non-commercial purposes.
