European Training Workshops on Research Management

Rob Johnson, Managing Director of Research Consulting, has served as a trainer for the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) since the inception of its Certificate in Research Management in 2015. This has involved the development and delivery of annual one-day workshops on “Research Policy and Strategy” and “Managing a Project Portfolio” through a combination of presentation, group discussion and structured exercises, together with the preparation and periodic updating of reference materials and reading lists.

The modules cover topics such as developing and implementing policy and strategy; engaging key personnel; continuous improvement; analysing the external environment; full economic costing for research; monitoring and managing high risk projects and using financial accounts to assess a research portfolio.

Well over one hundred research managers and administrators have attended these workshops over the last few years, with many going on to hold senior research management roles at universities across Europe and beyond
