Durham University commissioned Research Consulting to review its research data management (RDM) tools, services, and support. The aim was to explore the current state of RDM, compare practices to sector standards, identify gaps, risks, and opportunities, and generate recommendations for improvement.
Through a methodical approach combining desk research of key documentation (including RDM policy, RISE Capability assessment, and RISE priorities) and 13 in-depth stakeholder interviews across the University, this work evaluated the current state of RDM provision and identified priority areas for development.
The review highlighted some key challenges facing the University: staffing limitations; disciplinary barriers requiring targeted support approaches; gaps in evidence needed to inform technical investment; the need for value-driven advocacy to drive culture change; and the requirement for a more strategic approach to achieve concrete progress in RDM implementation.
Project outputs included a detailed assessment report and executive summary, structured around the University’s RISE priorities to ensure alignment with existing strategic frameworks and to provide practical guidance for resource prioritization in a constrained economic climate.
Research Consulting understood our needs and brought their expert knowledge and experience to the project. Their professionalism and skill were highly valued and have helped us better understand what we need to do to take our services to the next level.Stuart Hunt
