Enhancing Advisory Skills for the NIHR Research Support Service

Research Consulting was commissioned by the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Imperial College London and Partners Hub to design and deliver a bespoke workshop focused on strengthening the advisory capabilities of its expert team. The Hub, a collaboration of four leading research universities, supports health and care researchers across England to develop high quality, competitive funding applications. Recognising the crucial role that RSS Advisors play in guiding applicants, the Hub sought to enhance both the quality and consistency of client-facing interactions.

We developed and delivered a half day interactive workshop for Advisors, drawing on our extensive experience working with research organisations, funding bodies, and policy environments. The session explored core themes including customer oriented service delivery, consultancy skills, constructive and “difficult” feedback, boundary management, and the concept of the “trusted advisor”. Through presenter led insights, facilitated discussions, and scenario based exercises, participants examined the techniques, behaviours and reflective practices that underpin effective advisory work.

The workshop also introduced practical tools for preparation, delivery and follow up of client interactions, alongside strategies for managing real world challenges such as shifting agendas, unprepared applicants, or limited time. Advisors were encouraged to reflect on their own styles, identify opportunities for skill development, and consider how to tailor their approach to maximise both quality and value for clients.

Feedback from participants highlighted the usefulness of the frameworks provided, particularly around “ring craft”, active listening, and balancing expertise with facilitation. The Hub is now using the insights from this workshop to inform future training and strengthen service delivery across its advisory team.

Research Consulting Ltd provided a very insightful and valuable staff development session for our Research Support Service. Dan King facilitated a series of thought provoking discussions across the team, introducing us to subtle yet important distinctions between concepts that we had not previously explored, enriching our understanding and prompting deeper reflection on our everyday practice.
