Research Consulting conducted a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary Research Centres at the University of Warwick between April-July 2025. The study involved over 70 participants through interviews, surveys and workshops, examining the role and performance of university research centres. The final report provides recommendations for improving categorisation, governance, communications and support structures.

The University of Warwick commissioned Research Consulting to undertake a review of University Research Centres (URCs), with the review scope focused on what are currently classified as Category II Research Centres. The project aimed to:

  • understand the contribution of the 26 Category II Research Centres to the development of interdisciplinary research; and
  • consider recommendations that shape the future portfolio of Research Centres.

The approaches taken to the review included:

  • desk review of available evidence (including the most recent reports assessed as part of the triennial review);
  • interviews with academics and professional services staff;
  • two workshops with key stakeholders; and
  • a survey of Research Centre leads.

The report made recommendations in four areas:

  • the categorisation of Research Centres,
  • the governance of University Research Centres (URCs),
  • improving communications about the landscape of research centres; and
  • approaches to address their practical support needs.
