Research Consulting, working in partnership with CMS, are currently seeking expressions of interest for our 2023 Research Contracts Benchmarking exercise from higher education and research institutions in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Australia.
Building on our two previous benchmarking exercises, in 2013 and 2018, participation enables research performing organisations to benchmark contract volume and resourcing levels against their peers and explore the role of emerging artificial intelligence tools in the management of research contracts.
The project is now underway, but new institutions are still welcome to join the survey group, by providing their details using the link below.
Our methodology combines robust benchmarking data with deep sector knowledge to help institutions understand their strengths and weaknesses, and pinpoint areas for improvement.
We will facilitate the exchange of good practice between participants through case studies, and by exploring areas of emerging interest, such as the use of AI and the emergence of legal operations functions.
Participation is open to institutions from the UK, Republic of Ireland and Australia, enabling benchmarking against selected peers, national averages and international comparators.
Our standard rate of £4,495 + VAT (UK)/ €4,495 (ROI) includes:

We recognise that small and specialist institutions and non-university research performing organisations have particular needs in the area of contracts management. With the focus being on front end research development activities, the complexity of managing research contracts can lead to loss of income, reputational damage and poor project management.
We are exploring the potential to offer an adapted version of the survey at a reduced rate for these organisations. Please contact Rob Johnson to let us know if this would be of value for your organisation.
Research Consulting are people who listen; who ensure they understand; who know what’s possible and what’s not possible; but who never settle for vanilla; who breathe integrity, honesty and do their very best to deliver the very best; who collect data, the right amount, and take pains to interpret it correctly; who offer much more than just value; and who are people rather than a brand. Hamish MacAndrew, Former Chief Operating Officer, ARMA
Research Consulting quickly analysed our needs and developed a project scope to evaluate the approach to relationship management at the University, and make a series of recommendations based on international best practice in the sector. They were proactive in their communication, kept to schedule and delivered on time. They presented a useful report which has formed the basis of changes we are implementing in the University. We are very happy with the outcome.
– Stephanie Bales, Director of Research and Innovation, Teesside
The full survey, which underpins the project, will be launched in April 2023, with preliminary findings to be delivered from September 2023 and a full report by November 2023.
We are happy to answer any questions you might have. Please feel free to get in touch directly with any of us or via our contact page.
